Church and Home – Aug 14

‘The hills are alive, with the sound of music…’

‘The world is alive with the sound of…’ — how would you fill in that blank?

Every place has its own sounds.

Any day at the TMUC office those sounds include:

  • a soft subtle beep that accompanies the opening or closing of one of the glass entrance doors
  • a more distinct chime when someone rings the outside ‘bell’ requesting entrance to the building
  • occasionally the muffled murmur of voices emanating from the Food Bank room off Yale Hall, as volunteers place donations on shelves
  • the sounds of people playing pickle ball
  • the ping of the elevator, summoned by someone with a cart of groceries for the Seniors Meal Program

Sounds – ‘background’ sounds emitting from the life and ministries that flow through this building. Sounds of a community. Sounds of God present in the life being lived around and amongst us.

We invite you to pause and intentionally listen to the sounds around you, the sounds of life around you, the sounds of God present in the life being lived around and amongst you.  Those sounds – whether the sounds within the place we call home, the sounds we journey through while on a walk, the sounds of a place of work – are sounds that become familiar, that help shape our environment and our lives, are sounds that welcome us into the wonder and multiplicity of God’s creation.

OPENING PRAYER: Holy God, we sing of your power and your love.  We come together as your people, seeking to hear your Word, seeking to follow your way.  Be with us we pray.  Help us to follow you, to trust you, and to know you as our Maker, Defender, Redeemer and Friend.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.

ANTHEM: ‘Shine, Jesus Shine’ (Crystal Schau and Cheryl Jackson)

GOSPEL READING:  Luke 12:49-56

“I came to bring fire to the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! I have a baptism with which to be baptized, and what stress I am under until it is completed! Do you think that I have come to bring peace to the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division! From now on five in one household will be divided, three against two and two against three; they will be divided:
father against son
and son against father,
mother against daughter
and daughter against mother,
mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law
and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.”

He also said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west, you immediately say, ‘It is going to rain’; and so it happens. And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat’; and it happens. You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of earth and sky, but why do you not know how to interpret the present time?

HYMN: More Voices #78 “God Weeps”

PASTORAL PRAYER:

The prayer that Jesus taught…
Our Father, who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory.
Forever and ever.
AMEN
