This may come as an epiphany to some … today is Epiphany!

Many Christians celebrate January 6th as Epiphany.

Christians in Ukraine celebrate January 6th as Christmas Eve, January 7 as Christmas Day, and celebrate January 19th as Epiphany.  As Ukrainian Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus, the ‘Prince of Peace’, we continue to pray for peace. We pray for Russia to stop its invasion of Ukraine and to stop the devastating and killing bombings. We pray for peace.

The word ‘epiphany’ means an ‘insight’, a ‘revelation’, a moment of discovering or recognizing a profound reality.

On Epiphany, the church remembers both the Magi arriving with gifts for the infant Jesus and the baptism of Jesus.

The church celebrates Epiphany by remembering stories of God being revealed in the life of Jesus.

In the story of the Magi, God is revealed in Jesus to Gentile, or non-Jewish, people. In the baptism of Jesus, Jesus is named as God’s ‘beloved’ child (or son).

Epiphany is an invitation to Christians to ‘see’ the significance of the Christmas story.

Having celebrated the birth of Jesus, a birth announced by angels…

…having sung carols proclaiming the cosmic significance of this birth…

…we now begin the celebrate the life of Jesus.

Epiphany reminds us that the life of Jesus is saturated with the Spirit of God, that the life of Jesus is grounded in the grace of God, that the life of Jesus is a doorway to rediscovering God in, with and amongst us.

Epiphany invites us to see the world as God’s world; to acknowledge that God grieves as humans kill one another, as humans practice war rather than living in peace, as we fail to treat others and treat creation as expressions of God’s love.

We invite you to pause on this day of Epiphany and remember Jesus as God’s beloved; and remember Jesus who reveals that all people are God’s beloved.

  • TMUC’s Dinner Theatre returns with performances of ‘Borrowed Time” April 20-23.   Tickets go on sale on Saturday, February 18 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. in Yale Hall. Tickets are $50 each (purchasers receive a $20 donation receipt).  Non-refundable tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Ticket sales are limited to 30 tickets per person per purchase.

    Golden Tickets for those 90 years of age and over are available from Feb. 12-17 only. You may purchase a ticket for yourself and one guest in the front row of any performance.

    The Transcona Council for Seniors is hosting a Brunch and Bake sale in conjunction with the Feb. 18 tickets sales. Brunch may be purchased from 8:30-11:00 a.m. Doors open at 8:15.
