On Thursday as the community gathered to celebrate the life of Joan Cairns, we were invited to share a taste of Halwa. As it was explained to us, Halwa is a traditional dish from Afghanistan. It is slightly sweet and very fragrant, a style of spread, served with bread. It is a traditional dish of blessing – that the sweet scents and the sharing together help the spirit of the deceased to rise towards heaven.
Sharing in the bread and Halwa was a new experience for many of us gathered there. We tasted and ate with thanksgiving. We were thankful for the gathering, and we were thankful for the gift. We were thankful for that which was familiar and that which was new.
This Thanksgiving weekend, you are invited to think about the familiar and the new in your conversations, and in your own prayers. What are you thankful for that has been a familiar part of your life? And, what are you thankful for that you would consider new?
You are invited to be part of the Thanksgiving Service on Sunday at 10:00 at Transcona Memorial United Church. You are invited to be present. And, if you cannot be present, you are invited to join in the livestream. (There will not be a recording made.)
