Summer inspires songs!

Various songwriters and composers have turned summertime experiences into music, attempting to convey a sense of this season’s seasonal character.

Here are just a few examples of ‘summer songs’:

‘In the Summertime’ by Mungo Jerry
‘Summer in the City’ by The Lovin’ Spoonful
‘Summer Love’ by Justin Timberlake
‘Dancing in the Street’ by Martha and the Vandellas
‘Summer Nights’ by Olivia Newton-John
‘Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer” by Nat King Cole

Hopefully you recognize some of these songs – maybe you even found yourself humming some tunes as you read that list.

Musicians take us into life. With words and rhythms, they evoke memories and experiences and sometimes begin to shape our own experiences.

Just as there are many ‘summer songs’ we can hear find online or hear on the radio, there are also many hymns that convey and evoke experiences and awareness of God.

Summer has inspired songs!

God has inspired hymns!

And God has inspired scriptures!

To say that the Bible is inspired by God doesn’t mean that God wrote the Bible. It means that those who wrote the various books and passages in the Bible, did so attempting to convey a sense of God’s ‘character’, of God’s presence in history, of people’s experiences and encounters with God.

We invite you, this summer, to listen to some of your favourite ‘summer songs’. We invite you to also hum some of your favourite ‘God hymns’ or read some of your favourite ‘God scriptures’ and remember the times and ways you have experienced and encountered God in life.

This Sunday, we again invite you to in-person worship at 10 a.m. The service will also be live-streamed via ZOOM . Below is the link for the livestream:  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/7538449219

As a welcoming faith community we are looking for volunteers to welcome people to worship on Sunday mornings. We would like two greeters each Sunday to welcome people, give them a Sunday bulletin, put that week’s hymn numbers on the hymn boards etc.  If you can help, please contact the church office to learn which Sundays still need greeters and to volunteer. We continue to be grateful for your generous support of the TMUC community.  If you are wanting to make a donation online, here’s the link:

Hymn:VU#183 “We Meet You, O Christ, in Many a Guise”

Opening Prayer: God, bless us with hearts of faith that we may see the Christ in ‘many a guise’; that we might welcome everyone as a child of God; that we might discover You in all the wondrous diversity of humanity.  God, bless us with loving hearts that we might be ‘good neighbours’ to all we meet; that we might be people of compassion, hope and healing. We pray in the name and spirit of Jesus, the Christ. AMEN

GOSPEL READING: Luke 10:25-37
The Parable of the Good Samaritan
Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he said, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? What do you read there?” He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” And he said to him, “You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.”
But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend.’ Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Pastoral Prayer

The prayer that Jesus taught…
Our Father, who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil
For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory.
Forever and ever.
AMEN
