Long weekends aren’t what they used to be!

Canada approaches this year’s Victoria Day long weekend under continuing COVID-19 health regulations.

Which means that we aren’t travelling, we aren’t visiting in-person with people outside our own households and the people without cottages are still not able to gather for worship in the sanctuary on Sunday morning.

What it also means is that we are doing what we need to do to keep safe, to keep everyone safe, to continue to get through this pandemic being good neighbours to our neighbours near and far.

This ‘long’ weekend may remind us that the last 15 months have seemed to be a ‘long’ 15 months.

During these 15 months we have been waiting for a post-covid day and time.

For a people of faith, this can be a time to remember that God sometimes calls us to wait.

Last Thursday, in the Christian church calendar, was the Day of Ascension, when we remember the story of the resurrected Jesus ascending into the heavens.

In Luke’s gospel, Jesus tells his disciples that they are to return to the city of Jerusalem and wait for the gift of the Spirit.

Considering that Jerusalem was where Jesus had been arrested and crucified, that it was the city in which his disciples had since been hiding, Jerusalem may have been the last place they wanted to be!

Yet, they were told to wait in this place where they would not have chosen to be!

We would not choose to be in lockdown in our individual dwelling places, but here we are…waiting.

So, let us wait in the faith that says we wait not just for a lifting of health orders, but we wait for a new experience of God’s Spirit in our lives, in our communities, in our world.

We wait in hope. We wait for God to be amongst us in new and amazing ways!

We wait as a faithful people.
