Easter isn’t over yet!
For some people, Easter is still on its way. Ukrainian Easter will be celebrated on May 2.
But, even for Christians who are not members of the Ukrainian Church community, Easter isn’t over yet!
Because, in the Christian church, Easter is a ‘season’!
Easter Sunday was last Sunday but, on the church ‘liturgical’ calendar, this coming Sunday is called ‘The Second Sunday of Easter.’
The following Sunday is called (you have probably already guessed this) the Third Sunday of Easter!
And so on and so on until we reach the seventh Sunday of Easter on May 16th. May 23 is Pentecost Sunday, which, surprisingly, will be followed by ‘the first Sunday after Pentecost!’
The point is – Easter isn’t over yet!
Easter Sunday was a beginning, not an ending. Easter didn’t happen just once, it happened again and again for the first disciples of Jesus.
It happened as the risen Christ appeared to disciples in a locked room; as the risen Christ prepared breakfast for them on the beach; as the risen Christ chatted with disciples on the road to Emmaus.
But Easter also happened as the disciples saw Christ in the poor, the hungry and the vulnerable.
Easter also happened as the disciples realized there were no boundaries or barriers associated with God’s love. God loved everyone.
Easter happened as the disciples realized that the fear of death could not stop them from living the life Christ gave them.
Easter happened, and happens, as we love, we forgive, we believe in the sacredness of all people and all creation, and as we love, as Jesus loves us.
So….Happy Easter!
Perhaps you would like to celebrate Easter by lighting a candle in support of a Guaranteed Livable Income in Canada. There is lots of information on the United Church’s website – here’s a link:
The UCC Call for a Guaranteed Livable Income Program
There is an invitation to light a candle and post it on your social media, and to be in touch with your MP.
Our Elmwood-Transcona MP, Daniel Blaikie will be part of the regular Thursday morning ZOOM, and we will pause, with him, at 9:15 to light and candle and offer our prayers for poverty to end as a part of our weekly check-in and chat. Even if you only have a few moments we hope that you will join us in prayer.
Here is the ZOOM link for Thursday: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/7538449219
If you prefer to join us by being on a ‘Party-line’/’Conference Call’ style of phone call, the number to dial is: 204-272-7920
You will be asked if you want to ‘join a meeting’, (say yes), and then enter the meeting ID number: 753 844 9219
We look forward to seeing you again!
