Lent begins at home this year
It was a busy week with the Pancake Supper on Shrove Tuesday, the Ash Wednesday services (the International service is still available via the Vimeo link) and now we are coming to the first Sunday of Lent.

Lent is the 40 days before Easter (and the 6 Sundays). It is a time for getting ready for Easter, for journeying with Jesus to Jerusalem where there will be a Palm Parade, he will have a Last Supper with his disciples, and then prayer in a garden, a trial, crucifixion, silence and resurrection. We hope that you will be able to join us for brief Sunday morning gatherings.
You are invited to join us for Sunday morning worship on ZOOM to be followed by conversation. The Annual Meeting will be on ZOOM on March 7 at 10:30 following worship, but each Sunday of Lent and on Good Friday and Easter, we will worship together on ZOOM at 10:00 a.m.

Even though we cannot be together in one place, let’s continue to be a community at prayer together. We hope that on Sunday at 10:00, you will think about the gifts we have in our lives, and needs of our world, and then pray the Lord’s prayer (you can pray silently, or out loud).
And, sometime, when you want to have a longer worship time, we are including some words and videos for your use.
The Prayer List is distributed separately and allows us to remember specific people with our prayers. If you want to receive the Prayer List, or add a name (with their permission), please be in touch.
We are gathered for worship and work in Treaty One territory, which is the traditional land of the Anishinaabe, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dené peoples and the homeland of the Metis Nation. For thousands of years Indigenous Peoples walked this land and knew it to be the centre of their lives and their spirituality. We respect the Treaties that were made on these territories, we acknowledge the harms and mistakes of the past, and we dedicate ourselves to move forward in partnership with Indigenous communities in a spirit of reconciliation and collaboration.

You call us, O God, to be your people.
Again and again you invite us to journey with Jesus.
We come to worship today that we might be with you.
Open our ears to hear your Word.
Open our eyes to see your presence.
Open our minds to your truth.
Open our hearts to your justice.
Open our lives to your life.
We have come in Jesus’ name.

Let us pray:
Creator God, you are with us on our Lenten journey.
The expanse of the universe amazes us,
From the light of a star that guided Magi,
To the landing of Perseverance on Mars,
We are continually surprised by unfolding mystery.
We are grateful that your love abides in all these things.
Renew our faith as we marvel at that which is around us.
Help us to live in grace as the disciples that you call us to be.
For we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Matthew 6:1-6, 16-21
“Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven.
“So whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.
But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,
so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
“And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, so that they may be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.
But whenever you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
“And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.

Let us pray:
Again and again…
You meet us, God.
Again and again,
we arrive at this Lenten season;
we find our way back to the wilderness prophet,
find our way back to parables and healings,
find our way back to accompanying Jesus en route to Jerusalem,
find our way back to broken bread and looming shadow of a cross,
find our way back to Jesus, to the friendship of the Christ, to the heart of God.
Again and again we have found ourselves on this journey, God.
As we begin again this Lenten pilgrimage,
we do so in trust;
trust that again we will meet You,
again and again and again….
We trust in Your love, your grace,
Your blessing, your ongoing composition of creation.
We trust in the promise of flowers blooming in the wilderness,
of newness emerging from loss,
and of resurrection dancing away from death…
We begin again this Lenten expectation:
begin again and again to encounter You in the prayers of our hearts…
We pray for all who seek shelter from the cold in doorways, near street vents, in whatever place of outdoor shelter they can find…
We pray for food for all who hunger, education for all who yearn to learn,
healthcare for all people everywhere
and friendship for all who are alone…
We pray for all who dwell in fear,
for all who feel enclosed, entrapped in situations of loss, threat, abuse…
We pray for all who feel lost, set adrift,
who feel that everything is shifting and unsettled…
We pray for the planet earth, for healing, for harmony, and for humans to learn to live in peace with this world…
We pray for growth in humanity’s expressions of respect, compassion and civility…
We pray for deeper awareness of our relatedness and connectedness with all creation…
We pray for spirits attuned to Your Spirit, God.
We pray for faith-filled hearts and imaginations that make us aware of meeting you again and again, God:
make us aware that You meet us again and again.
You meet us again and again.
You meet us in the Christ.
In the spirit of Christ we pray. AMEN
