“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!”
You may recognize those words from the Brother Grimm’s tale of the young woman Rapunzel who is trapped in a tower. The only way anyone can access the tower is for Rapunzel to ‘let down’ her long golden hair as a ‘rope’ for the person to climb.
Some of us may be feeling a little Rapunzel-like after weeks of Code Red lockdowns.
Most of us so seldom get out of our living places that we might easily empathize with Rapunzel in her tower. But, where she was held captive against her will, we are willingly staying at home in order to help limit the spread of COVID-19.
We are staying home even though we miss visiting with one another. We are staying home even though we want to do the things that we used to do – shopping takes planning and precautions, a visit to a gym is not yet allowed, we cannot dine in a restaurant, haircuts are limited, movies, theatres, sports, are all on our household screens. Even church is on a screen, or in a phone call.
This staying at home by choice can make us appreciate the connections and activities that have been a part of our lives.
And, when we can finally emerge from our ‘towers’ and visit the places we used to visit, hopefully we will take with us a new sense of appreciation and say ‘thank you’ not only more often but also with more emphasis: thank you to those with whom we share life in so many diverse ways!
Every Thursday we are invited to share life with our faith community as we gather online for a time of visiting. Our weekly ZOOM check-in continues tomorrow at 9 a.m. Everyone is welcome to join this online time of visiting.
