Let’s start with a bit of news!
The cheques have arrived and we are thrilled to report that the Scrap Metal Drive not only saved a significant amount of metal from the land fill, it raised $290.15! Thanks to Steve McKendry-Smith for organizing, Ben Zinn (Meridian Hauling) for donating the BIG bin and his help, and the Building and Property Team for helping this to happen and, of course, thanks to all who contributed!
And, here we are in mid-October.
October is the tenth month of the year.
The word ‘October’ derives from a Latin and Greek word meaning ‘eight’ (an ‘octagon’ is an eight-sided figure).
So, if you want to remember that October is the 10th month of the year, just remember that the word means eight!
Huh??
That made sense when October WAS the eighth month of the year, back around 750 B.C.E. when the Roman calendar was created.
However, about 300 years later, the months of January and February were added to the calendar.
Since 8 + 2 = 10, October got moved to become the 10th month.
For some of us, during this time of COVID, none of that really matters, because one month seems to be very much like any other month – masks, distancing, walks, work from home…
For some – looking for food, for shelter, for a friendly face…
Day after day, week after week, month after month…
when time seems to be passing quickly…
or when time seems to be dragging on…
when each month brings new expectations…
or when each month seems like a continuation of the previous month…
our faith is in God present in every day, week and month;
in God for whom “one day is a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.’ (2 Peter 3:8)
Whether 1 = 1,000, or the 8th is now the 10th, we are living in God’s love.
We are living in God’s world. This always has been God’s world. This still is God’s world. This always will be…God’s world.
So there is beauty in this world; there is kindness in this world; there is hope in this world.
There is God…in this world: God in, with and amongst us all.
Whatever month it is, it is a gift from God.
And it is a month in which TMUC’s weekly Zoom gatherings continue.
