Try Being a Poet

“If you are a poet, you will see clearly that there is a cloud floating in this sheet of paper. Without the cloud there can be no rain; without water, the trees cannot grow; and without trees, you cannot make paper. So the cloud is in here. The existence of this page is dependent upon the existence of a cloud. Paper and cloud are so close.” -Thich Nhat Hanh, Buddhist monk

Today is a good day to be a poet.  Poets see things, and also see into things, and also see beyond things, and also see the beyond in things.

Without cloud and water and sun and soil … we would not exist.

Most of the elements of our bodies were once part of stars.

If you are a poet you will see clearly there is a cloud in you…and stardust…and something sacred.

The book of Genesis says that human beings are created in the image of God. Our existence is dependent on the existence of a Creator – of God.

So, try being a poet this week. As you read a book, or iron a shirt, or knead some dough, or listen to a voice on the telephone, or wash your hands…try to see the cloud floating in everything, try to hear the song of creation in everything, try to meet God present in God’s creation.

And if you’d like to chat with other trying-to-be poets, join in one of TMUC’s ZOOM chats.

June ZOOM’s are Thursdays from 9 to 10 a.m. and Mondays from 7 to 8 p.m.  Carol and I are taking turns hosting the ZOOMS while we each enjoy some holiday time this month.
